PRESIDENT
Darlene Estes-Dangerfield
Welcome to the Association of Black Correctional Workers (ABCW) website. The ABCW organization is a professional association that was established in California in 1972. The organization is dedicated to promoting an awareness of values, contributions and potential of the Black Correctional Worker and allied professionals in the criminal justice system. Our goals include serving as strong, visible advocates for recognition of members and their contributions, and effecting positive changes in training and promotional policies within the criminal justice system. Our membership is open to all correctional employees and allied professionals, regardless of race.
Since its inception, ABCW has served its membership and advocated for the training and development of state correctional employees. ABCW consists of the Statewide Executive Board and thirteen local Chapters located in communities throughout the State of California.
ABCW has been instrumental in training thousands of state employees through some 35 annual statewide training conferences over the last three decades. With the intent of helping members develop work related skills to supporting personal growth, an array of training courses (i.e. Completed Staff Work and Upward Mobility, Financial Planning and Managing a Multi-generational Workforce, and preparing for Retirement) have been made available throughout the years.
ABCW has established a partnership with the National Institute of Corrections to increase awareness of resources available to all law enforcement personnel. Specifically information available on:
o Research for new initiatives and projects
o Policies and procedures,
o Availability of nationally sponsored training /technical assistance
o Access by members to NIC Information Resource Center.
ABCW Chapters have worked to identify and address the issues of local members, sponsored local events, and supported local charities and communities. Local Chapter activities are a vital part of the mission of ABCW.
We ask that you support the efforts of ABCW by becoming an active member. We look forward to having you as a part of the dedicated team of professionals serving in law enforcement throughout the state of California.
